ISLAMABAD, MARCH 5. The Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, left here today on a four-day official visit to the Central Asian Republics (CARs) Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The first ever visit of Gen. Musharraf to the two Republics is aimed at boosting political and economic ties and "increasing cooperation" in the war against international terrorism. Since the emergence of CARs, in the aftermath of disintegration of Soviet Union, Pakistan has been vigorously pursuing relations with the central Asian countries. It believes that given the strategic location of Pakistan, it could become the corridor for economic cooperation for the region. On his way to the two countries Gen. Musharraf made a brief stopover at Beirut to offer condolence on the death of former Lebanese Prime, Minister Rafiq Hariri. Talking to reporters before his departure, President Musharraf said his visit aimed at boosting diplomatic, political and economic relations with these countries. He said both Pakistan and Uzbekistan had been victims of terrorism and there were many Uzbek nationals in the country's tribal region.
Militants killed
Meanwhile, Pakistan has claimed to have killed two foreign origin Al-Qaeda members and arrested 11 others, including three foreigners in an ambush operation in northern Waziristan. Director General of Inter Services Public Relations, Shaukat Sultan, said the incident took place in Devgar village after security forces surrounded a house occupied by militants and opened fire. Fleeing the military operations by the United States led coalition in Afghanistan, a number of Al-Qaeda members are believed to have crossed over to the tribal belt in Pakistan. The estimates of Al-Qaeda activists sheltered in the belt vary from 500 to 600.
