BISHKEK (Kyrgyzstan): Hundreds of Opposition supporters swelled the ranks of a protest in southern Kyrgyzstan on Saturday, demonstrating against alleged fraud in parliamentary elections last month. The protesters demanded President Askar Akayev and other local officials resign and that their losing Opposition candidate, Jusupbek Bakiyev, be allowed to re-contest the February 27 ballot. Dozens of police officers and soldiers watched the protest in Jalal-Abad, 600 km south of the capital Bishkek, but did not intervene. Demonstrators occupied the city's administration building on Friday. About 100 remained there on Saturday, while 1,000 others gathered outside, said Orozaly Karasartov, a spokesman for the regional Governor. Senior presidential aide Bolotbek Januzakov said the protesters' actions were unlawful and their demands would not be met. AP
