PONDICHERRY, MARCH 5. Autonomy will be granted to the Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research only after a consensus is reached, the Union Health Minister, Anbumai Ramadoss, said here today. Talking to newspersons after chairing an all-party meeting, he said consultations would continue. At the meeting, attended by representatives of political parties, a majority of them favoured autonomy.
Pointing out that autonomy for JIPMER was a long pending issue, he said when the institute was upgraded in 1962 two other institutes the PGI Chandigarh and the AIMMS were also developed. The original proposal was to make all the three autonomous. But only the PGI Chandigarh and the AIMMS were granted autonomy, he said.
`Benefits will continue'
"Even after autonomy the free health delivery system and service benefits enjoyed by the employees will continue. There will not be any change", he said. Besides, giving a boost to research in the institute, the increase in flow of allocation after autonomy could be used for developing infrastructure. The Health Minister said once the infrastructure was in place it could handle up to 10,000 patients. At present, it handles 4000 patients a day. The annual allocation to JIPMER, which was Rs 59.85, crores would go up by several crores. Huge allocations could not be allowed at present since there was scarcity of projects and there was delay in taking decisions. In such a case the money would only lapse, he said.
