CHANDIGARH, MARCH 5. The Congress MP from Rohtak, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, today became the 19th Chief Minister of Haryana. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by the Governor, A.R. Kidwai, at a brief ceremony in Raj Bhavan here this evening.

The three Congress observers, P.M. Sayeed, Janardhan Dwivedi and Ashok Gehlot, the former Chief Minister and State unit president, Bhajan Lal, the Union Minister, Selja, and several MPs attended the function. Mr. Hooda's father, Ranbir Singh, was also present on the dais.

Supporters gatecrash

As enthusiastic supporters of the Jat leader tried to gatecrash the high-security venue, the Chandigarh police resorted to use of force. Several mediapersons and senior officers had to bear the brunt of the police action. Inside, even as Mr. Hooda was signing the oath, crowds descended on the dais and the National Anthem could not be heard in the ensuing din.

Earlier, in a brief interaction with journalists, Mr. Hooda said that his priorities would be to resolve the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal imbroglio, improve the law and order situation and provide a clean, responsive and transparent administration. He reiterated his resolve to weed out corruption without indulging in political vengeance and said that action would be taken against those who had violated rules and amassed wealth. He asserted that there was "unity" in the Congress.
