31 shops gutted

VELLORE MARCH 5. Thirtyone shops including five hotels and four teastalls were gutted in a fire which broke out in a shopping area opposite the Dharmaraja Temple in Thottapalayam on Katpadi road here past midnight last night. The fire is said to have emanated from one of the hotels and spread to other shops. The Fire and Rescue Services personnel summoned seven fire engines from Vellore, Katpadi and Arcot and put out the blaze.

Sri Lankan held

TIRUCHI MARCH 5. A Sri Lankan Tamil was arrested by the police here today on the charge of obtaining an Indian passport, giving a fictitious name with false documents and address.

Police sources here said Sankarlal (36), a resident of K.K. Nagar here, came to Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka in 1990 and obtained an Indian passport in 1995, giving a bogus name and submitting false documents. The passport was sent for renewal. When it was sent for police verification the crime came to light.

Course on Gandhi

CHENNAI MARCH 5. The Chennai-based Gandhi Study Centre will offer a three-month correspondence course on "Mahatma Gandhi. Let us Know Gandhi." The last date for registration of the summer course is April 7. The course material will be in Tamil and English. The registration and course fee is Rs. 100. Those who register their names will get study material free of cost. No qualification and age limit is required. Mill workers seek wage hike

CHENNAI MARCH 5. The Tamilnadu Joint Action Council of Textile Trade Unions has criticised the State Government for not taking steps to begin negotiation on wages for over three lakh mill workers.

The council, which met in Dindigul recently, said though a new wage agreement was due from January 1999, managements were not ready to negotiate with trade unions. The Government, which had to take the initiative, did not attempt to bring the management to the negotiating table. Though an interim award was announced by the Government, it was not implemented by the textile mills.

As the workers were frustrated by the continued silence of the Government and the managements, they decided to stage dharnas in front of Government offices and court arrest in large numbers on May 16. They would also organise demonstrations in front of offices of Labour Inspectors on April 18.

Representatives from the LPF, the CITU, the AITUC, the HMS and the INTUC participated in the meeting.

Meet on `Search and Rescue'

CHENNAI MARCH 5. A two-day international seminar on `Search and Rescue' (SAR) hosted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and sponsored by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Asia Pacific Region, will be held in Chennai on Monday.

The seminar will be followed by SAR exercises, both over land near Vandalur and over sea on March 9 and 10. The objective is to refresh participants on the States' responsibility in SAR and to keep them informed about the latest developments in SAR techniques, practices and infrastructure.

The ICAO experts, delegates from over 15 countries, besides SAR Board members will participate in the international meet and in the exercises thereafter and address various issues and advancements in this area of SAR in the event of any untoward aircraft accident, for saving precious human lives.

Freedom fighters thank Sonia

CHENNAI MARCH 5. The All-India Freedom Fighters Successor's Organisation has thanked the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, for appointing the organisation's working president, Bhupendra Singh Hooda as Haryana Chief Minister. Mr. Hooda is the son of one of the few surviving members of the Constituent Assembly, Chowdhary Ranbir Singh, according to a release.

Killed in accident

Nagercoil March 5. An employee of Indian Rare Earth Limited at Manavalakurichi was killed on the spot in an accident on Friday.

According to the police, Kumaresan (48) of Mandaicadu was going to Lekshmipuram near Monday Market with his friend Murughan when a motorbike from the opposite direction hit the vehicle at Karumankoodu near Mandaicadu. While Kumaresan died, Murughan was rushed to the Government Hospital here.

Electrocuted

Ganesan (30) was electrocuted when he came into contact with a live wire here today.

The police said the deceased was engaged in some construction work at Gandhi Nagar here, when the mishap occurred.

One killed

Nagercoil March 5. One person was killed in a road mishap at Aralvaimozi today.

According to the police, Rajan (22) of Vellichanthai was going to Aralvaimozi , a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus bound for Nagercoil from Tirunelveli dashed against the vehicle, killing him on the spot.

Hunt on for four

Tuticorin March 5. The police are on the lookout for Jeyaraj and his three accomplices, who allegedly assaulted Vethamani (30) here on Friday.

The police said the accused attacked the complainant with a sickle at Jegaveerapuram, owing to enmity.

Medical camp

VIRUDHUNAGAR MARCH 5. A total of 1525 persons, including children, were today screened for various ailments at a special medical camp held at Sankaralingapuram in Virudhunagar block.

The camp, organised by the Public Health Department, was inaugurated by the Collector, A. Mohammed Aslam. While 10 persons were detected to have cancer, one nine-year-old boy was diagnosed with heart ailment.

He was referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, an official statement said.

A total of 10 persons were identified for undergoing cataract surgery.
