By Our Staff Correspondent
BIDAR, MARCH 5. A deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fingerprinting technology laboratory will be set up in Bangalore soon to investigate crimes better, the Director General of Police (Corps of Detectives, Telecommunication and Technical Modernisation), K.R. Srinivasan, said here on Friday. Speaking to presspersons after inaugurating a wireless repeater centre at Halahalli in Bhalki taluk, he said that the centre will start functioning by the end of the year. The centre is estimated to cost Rs. 3 crores. Construction of the building has already started and will take around six to nine months to complete, he said.
`Save time'
Setting up such a centre in Bangalore will save us a lot of time. Till now, we had to approach DNA laboratories in Hyderabad and Kolkata for identification of criminals, Mr. Srinivasan said. A team of experts, headed by a former scientist from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Sharat Chandra, has been assigned the task of setting up the centre, he added. He said that the modernisation of the State police force was being taken up at a cost of Rs. 750 crores, received as grants from the Centre and the State Government in the last four years.
Funds released
The Centre has released 50 per cent of the grants for 2000-2001 and has agreed to contribute 60 per cent of the grant for the next two years. The money has been used for building construction, human resources development, purchasing vehicles, communication, computerisation and weapon procurement, and purchase of other equipments. POLNET, the Union Government scheme of networking 10,000 police stations, will also become operational soon. The networking scheme will provide facilities for voice and data transfer between stations and increase the efficiency of the force, he said. All 690 police stations which will be linked to this network will be given generators to ensure the system works round the clock, Mr. Srinivasan said. The Inspector General of police (North East Range), S. Ramakrishna; the Superintendent of Police, Gulbarga, K. Ramachandra Rao; the Superintendent of Police, Bidar, Umesh Kumar; the Additional Superintendent of Police, V.B. Kittali; the Wireless Deputy Superintendent, Chandraprakash; the Wireless inspector, A.S. Avanti; officials of the Karnataka Land Army Corporation; and other officials were present.
