Manipur
By Iboyaima Laithangbam
IMPHAL, MARCH 5. The State and Central forces have intensified operations against the insurgents in the valley districts. This is despite the Centre seriously examining the peace proposals put forth by the United National Liberation Front. Last night, two insurgents were gunned down at Laphupat Tera in Bishnupur district. Earlier, the forces killed three insurgents in Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts. Altogether four guns, assorted ammunition and other incriminating documents were recovered. However, some others managed to escape. The police sources said the people were fed up with the excesses and extortions of the insurgents in the name of independence.Admitting that the Army was facing the urban guerilla movement for the first time in Manipur, army officers said the primary task of the counter-insurgency operations was to isolate the insurgents from the people. On the other, most of the proscribed underground organisations seem to have backed out of the commitment not to attack the police and paramilitary forces. There are increasing instances of attacking the police force and no underground organisation has claimed responsibility for such attacks.
