SRIKAKULAM, MARCH 5. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, today asked people to compare the nine-year rule of the TDP Government with the nine-month rule of the Congress. The TDP rule was pro-rich and benefited a few while the Congress regime was pro-poor, aiming at ensuring the welfare of farmers, the down-trodden, women, youth and weaker sections. Reeling out statistics about various schemes launched in the last nine months, Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy wanted to know whether any other Government could do better. As part of Nagarabaata programme in the district, Dr. Reddy addressed public meetings at Itchapuram and Amadalavalasa. Citing the example of Srikakulam, Dr. Reddy said that his Government cleared the way for the execution of Rs.1000-crore Vamsadhara Stage II project which would stabilise ayacut in 1.50 lakh acres and create 1.07 lakh acres of additional ayacut. Work on the Rs.500-crore Thotapalli irrigation project was progressing well. He also announced sanction of Rs.158-crore up-shore reservoir at Nandigam that would ensure irrigation to 25000 acres in five mandals Tekkali, Palasa, Vajrapukotturu, Meliaputti and Nandigam.
Anganwadi wages up
He announced enhancement of wages to Anganwadis from Rs.1000 to Rs.1200, and gram sevaks from Rs.1200 to Rs.1500 a month, effective from April 1. During the TDP rule, the old had to wait for some other old man to die to get new pension because the number of pensioners had not been increased. But his Government had not only increased the number of pensioners to 2.25 lakhs but also enhanced the amount from Rs.75 to Rs.100 a month, Dr. Reddy said. He said that the annual allotment for the Rajiv Yuva Sakthi programme would be doubled from Rs. 321 crores from next year. The TDP Government had promised construction of 35 lakh houses at the rate of seven lakh per year. But it had not constructed even seven lakh houses in the last five years. The houses constructed were grabbed by TDP workers. The poor and the deserving had never been benefited from the housing scheme during the TDP regime, Dr. Reddy said. The endeavour of the Congress Government was to usher in `Indiramma Rajyam' and "we have been moving in that direction," Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy said. Sanction of loans to women groups at an interest of just 25 paise and allotment of Rs.1 crore to each mandal for women self-help groups were aimed at empowerment of women, he said. Earlier, the Ministers Dharamana Prasada Rao (Revenue), Botsa Satyanarayana (Major Industries) and K.Vijayarama Rao (Civil Supplies) recalled the developmental projects that were being executed after Dr. Reddy had taken over charge.
