HUBLI, MARCH 5. Gangubai Hangal, the doyenne of the Hindustani classical music and exponents of the Kirana Gharana, turned 93 today. Her admirers and disciples made a beeline to "Ganga Lahari" in Deshpande Nagar to wish her. Her birthday celebrations have always been a quiet family affair, with a traditional arati being performed in the morning and a feast preceded by puja. This time, it was a little different. Ms. Hangal celebrated her birthday without her daughter, Krishna, who was her constant companion. Tears welled up in her eyes, as she remembered Krishna. Ms. Hangal's grandson, Manoj, announced the plans to launch a museum of Indian classical music and Hangal Music Foundation. The museum will be launched with a collection of old and rare photographs of Ms. Hangal and her contemporaries and the awards she has received, he said. Speaking to presspersons at the first official press conference convened in Hubli, Mr. Hangal said that she had lost zest for singing after her daughter's death. "Krishna was my companion, my understudy. She picked up music just be listening to me and had not had any formal training," she said.
She said that she enjoyed performing. Sometimes, she would let herself drift in the melody of the raga she was rendering. Music helped her have a communion with God, she said. Asked why she chose to live in Hubli, she said, "Hubli is my home town. I cannot think of leaving it for anything in the world."
