APIDC cuts interest rate

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (APIDC) has reduced interest rates on term loans to new industrial units from 13 per cent to 12.5 per cent. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the APIDC Chairman, S. Indrasain Reddy, said the board meeting had decided to slash interest rates to encourage entrepreneurs. An additional incentive of 1 per cent was also being extended to industrialists keen on setting up units.

SSC hall-tickets on Net

HYDERABAD: Hall-ticket numbers of all regular/private candidates appearing for the SSC public examination will be displayed on the internet to facilitate them to know their roll numbers and the centre allotted. This facility is being made available from March 5 to 16.

A press release issued by the Director of Andhra Pradesh Government Examinations said on Saturday that the original hall-tickets had already been despatched to the forwarding institutions concerned. Those candidates who failed to get their hall-tickets may make use of the internet printouts provided their photo identity was established by the respective heads of the institutions who forwarded their names.

Ban on strike in SCCL

HYDERABAD: The Government has prohibited strike in the Singareni Collieries Company Limited spread over Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam districts for a further period of six months with effect from March 7. This was stated here on Saturday in an official release.

Contract workers' wages revised

VISAKHAPATNAM: The State Government has revised the wages of contract workers with effect from January 27, according to the Deputy Labour Commissioner, M.N. Varahala Reddy. He has called upon contractors, union leaders and management to make a note of the revised rates: skilled workers, Rs. 3,654 per month (Rs.140.54 per day) and semi-skilled workers Rs. 3,020 (Rs.116.15 daily). For unskilled workers, the wages have been fixed at Rs.2.386 (Rs. 91.77 per day).

Prizes for scientists

HYDERABAD: B.M. Birla Science Centre has invited nominations for the B.M. Birla Science Prizes for outstanding original contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology by Indian scientists born and working in the country and born on or after January 1, 1964. The award carries a prize of Rs. 1 lakh per subject. According to a press release, nominations with details of the research work done, published papers and a statement of the merit of the work should be forwarded by the Heads of the respective institutions to the Birla Science Centre Director before May 15.

Over 9,000 birds perish in fire

VIZIANAGARAM: About 9,000 birds in a poultry perished in a fire accident at Babametta in the town on Saturday. Five thatched houses near the poultry were also destroyed.

According to the fire office sources, fire broke out at the poultry and later spread to the nearby huts due to short-circuit. The loss of property is being estimated.

Case against 16 for clash

KURNOOL: Sixteen persons were booked in connection with clashes between the supporters of TDP and Congress at Kosigi in Kurnool district on Friday night.

According to reports, the supporters of both parties clashed causing injuries to eleven persons, including two policemen. The supporters of Congress and TDP had been at loggerheads in the area since long with each group holding sway over different streets. When a tractor belonging to the TDP leader went to the Congress-dominated street, the latter detained the vehicle. On learning about it, both groups clashed.

The police, who learnt about the clash, rushed to the place. A head constable and a constable were injured.

Contractor dies in attack

GADWAL: A contractor, Madhusudan Reddy, died in attack at Santinagar in Alampur constituency of Mahabubnagar district on Friday night. According to reports, four unidentified persons came to his site office offering to sell road construction material. Later, the assailants, armed with sickles, pounced on him and injured him seriously. They also beat up his assistant, Rammohan.

The seriously injured Reddy died while being shifted to hospital at Kurnool.

Teacher held for `misbehaviour'

KARIMNAGAR: In an unusual incident, a Government schoolteacher was arrested on the charge of misbehaving with a 14-year-old ninth class girl student at Zilla Parishad High School in Bejigiri Sherief village of Jammikunta mandal on Saturday. According to the Jammikunta Sub-Inspector, B. Srinivasa Reddy, the accused, G. Venkateshwarlu (45), who is working as school assistant and teaching physics, behaved indecently with the girl in front of all other students of the class. When the girl questioned his misbehaviour, he did it again.

Humiliated over his behaviour, she went away from the school and complained to her father. Based on a complaint by her father, the police registered a case under IPC 354 and arrested the accused.

Couple commits suicide

WARANGAL: A couple committed suicide due to a family dispute in the wee hours of Saturday. A 22-year-old Sumalatha died instantaneously when she jumped into a water tank at Gopalpur colony after a quarrel with her husband Yugandhar, an autorickshaw driver. When he went in search of his wife, he found her dead and frustrated over the development, he too jumped into the tank and died. The bodies were shifted to hospital for post-mortem examination.

Two stabbed to death

Kakinada: Two persons -- a woman and a girl -- were stabbed to death following a land dispute at Seethampet village in Sankhavaram mandal in the early hours of Saturday. The dead were identified as Mathina Satyavati (28) and her sister's daughter, Mathina Nagalakshmi (13).

According to the police, the accused, Mathina Jogiraju, first attacked his sister-in-law Satya (32) and later his wife Satyavati and Nagalakshmi. While Satya sustained injuries, the other two died on the spot.

Dry weather prevails in State

Hyderabad: Dry weather prevailed in the State on Saturday. Day temperature fell at a few places in Coastal Andhra and it changed a little in Telangana and Rayalaseema. The maximum temperature for the day was recorded at 39 degree Celsius by Anantapur and Cuddapah. The night temperature went up at a few places in Telangana and Rayalaseema and changed a little in Coastal Andhra. The lowest night temperature was recorded by Arogyavaram at 17 degree Celsius. Forecast for Sunday is mainly dry weather in the State.

YSR's visit postponed

ANANTAPUR: The Nagarabata visit of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to Tadipatri and Anantapur towns in the district scheduled for March 12 has been postponed to March 20.

Suicide bid

CUDDAPAH: An SSC student, Varalakshmi (15), of Kalamalla in Yerraguntla mandal, tried to commit suicide by jumping under a train at Yerraguntla railway station on Saturday, according to the police. Onlookers pulled her away and alerted the police. The girl an SSC student of the ZP High School at Potladurthy, said she tried to commit suicide due to fear of impending exams.

Relay fast by students

ANANTAPUR: The Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) unit of Students' Federation of India (SFI) launched a relay fast on the campus on Saturday demanding immediate opening of the campus. The SFI leaders also demanded debarring of all the AISF students who had attacked the SFI student and criminal cases against them.

Ganja seized

CUDDAPAH: The police arrested a woman, Shaik Noorjehan, of Sriramanjaneya Nagar in Badvel town and seized 50 ganja sachets from her, according to the Badvel SI, Satya Babu.

Legal bulletin

ANANTAPUR: The local station of All India Radio (FM) will broadcast `Nyaya Samacharam', a bulletin on legal matters, every Saturday at 8.15 a.m. According to the programme executive of the AIR, Shirley Jacob, the bulletin seeks to spread legal literacy and keep the public aware of the legal angles to civil, labour and family-related issues. A repeat broadcast can be heard at 6 p.m. on the same day.

Bandh peaceful

Mahabubnagar: The district bandh call given by CPI (Maoist) on Saturday in protest against fake encounters evoked little response. It was incident free.

As a preventive measure, the RTC authorities at Nagar Kurnool and Achampet suspended services to remote villages. The bandh call had no impact in the district headquarters town of Mahabubnagar, Shadnagar, Gadwal, Narayenpet and Jadcharla.

Two grilled

KHAMMAM: The police raided a house and picked up two persons suspected to have links with Maoists in Kothagudem on Friday night.

Both the persons were questioned and let off on Saturday, according to a senior police officer. The police stepped up security in the district in view of the Chief Minister's visit to Sathupalli on March 7.

Man kills uncle, ends life

NALGONDA: In a shocking incident, K. Lakshmaiah on Saturday allegedly killed his uncle K. Nagaiah and later committed suicide.

According to information reaching here, Lakshmaiah of Pajjur village of Tipparthi mandal had a land dispute with his uncle for a long time. They ran into each other in a toddy compound and in a fit of rage, Lakshmaiah allegedly hacked Nagaiah to death. He later fled to his house and consumed pesticide.

Constable held

ADILABAD: A constable under suspension, Narayana, was arrested for allegedly harassing women by the II town police on Saturday. According to police, Narayana stalked a couple of women who were going home to Hanumannagar after attending a `pravachanam' at the DIET grounds at about 8.30 p.m. A case was booked against him. The constable was placed under suspension about 15 days back on the charge of harassing women in the bus stand.

Woman found dead

ADILABAD: A 28-year-old married woman, Susheela of Kuntal mandal headquarter village, was found dead on Saturday morning in the ZPHS cycle stand. The police suspect it to be a rape and murder case in which at least two persons were involved. Two empty liquor bottles and strands of hair in the hand of the woman were found.
