CPI flays proposal to close thermal station

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 5. The CPI State Council today urged the Government not to rush through the proposal to shut down the Nellore Thermal Station following the reported recommendation of APGenco.

K. Narayana, assistant secretary of the party, in a letter to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, accused APGenco of inflating the cost to Rs.70 crores for repairing the thermal station, when the real cost would be only Rs.10 crores.

Alternative first

The CPI leader wanted the thermal station to be allowed to function till an alternative was found in Nellore. He expressed doubts about the viability of four gas-based power units in view of the inability of the Gas Authority of India to ensure supply to the units. So, the Government was likely to be burdened with a power bill of Rs.1,000 crores after 2006, he said.

He suggested strengthening of APGenco and wanted the Government to ensure that the Nellore and Rayalaseema thermal plants continue to operate so as to provide quality power to consumers.

Mr. Narayana criticised "lacuna" in the agreement leading to payment of Rs.35 crores to independent power producers like LVS.
