SSLC theory papers

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. March 5. Students who could not attend the Information Technology (IT) practical examination conducted for tenth standard between February 17 and 28 will be allowed to appear for the SSLC theory papers staring March 9. The respective educational officers have been asked to direct headmasters not to withhold the hall tickets of such candidates, a press note said here today. Such students should participate in the IT practical examinations that would be held on March 29 and March 30, after the theory examination, the press note added.

Awards for journalists

The A.S. Hameed Sahib awards for journalists working in small and medium newspapers for 2004 have gone to Basheer Puthanveetttil of Tirur and G. Gopinath Kottarakkara. Mr. Basheer is editor of Prahelika daily being published from Tirur in Malappuram district. Mr. Gopinath is a senior journalist with Thaniniram daily of Thiruvananthapuram.

It was a five-member jury chaired by M.K. Muneer, the Minister for Public Works, that selected the winners, said Kalapremi Basheer Babu, secretary of the Kalapremi Hameed Memorial Trust that has instituted the awards.

The awards carrying a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 each, besides a citation and a statuette, will be given away here in the third week of March.

New Public Relations Director

K.C. Venu has taken charge as Director of Public Relations. Mr. Venu who joined the Public Relations Department as an Assistant Information Officer in 1981, has worked as IO in Malappuram and Kottayam, Deputy Director in New Delhi and secretary to the Kerala Press Academy. He hails from Cherayi in Ernakulam district.

Transport staff hold dharna

The Kerala State Transport Employees Sangh held a dharna in front of the Secretariat today demanding supply of diesel at reduced price, five-year moratorium from all taxes for RTCs, sanctioning of capital by the Union and State Governments and announcement of transport policy. The dharna was inaugurated by the State president of the organisation, K. Gangahdaran.

Negation of democracy, says RSP

The RSP has described as a negation of democracy the invitation extended by the Governors of Goa and Jharkand to those who could not prove their majority to form the Ministry. The State committee of the party, which met in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, criticised the role played by the Congress leadership. The meeting wanted the two Governors to be removed for not discharging the responsibilities given to them in an impartial and truthful manner.

The meeting elected V.P. Ramakrishna Pillai, K. Sankaran Nair, P.L. Divakaran, N.K. Premachandran, A.A. Aziz, Illickal Augusthy, S. Sathyapalan, Ambalathara Sreedharan Nair and K.S. Venugopal to the State secretariat. Pulluvila Lawrence was co-opted to the State committee.

The State secretary, T.J. Chandrachoodan, presented the report at the meeting, which was chaired by V.P. Ramakrishna Pillai.

Open House

KOLLAMKOZHIKODEKOZHIKODE, MARCH 5.MARCH 5.MARC Kollam Telecom will organise an `Open House' for BSNL subscribers in the district at the Kottarakara Nathan Plaza Hotel auditorium on March 7, and not at Hotel Sudarsan auditorium as reported in these columns on March 5. The open house will start at 2.30 p.m.

English course

The District Centre for English (DCE) at Puthur, near here, is organising a one-year correspondence course in English language for teachers in English. The course is for those who had undergone a ten-day course in English at the DCE, a Government in-service training centre for English teachers. Class

The Income Tax office at Kollam is organising a class on tax deduction at source. The Income Tax Additional Commissioner, N. Raghavan, will talk on the subject. The class will be held at the Income Tax office near the Archana-Aradhana theatre complex on March 9.

Sivarathri

KOLLAMKOZHIKODEKOZHIKODE, MARCH 5.MARCH 5.MARC The three-day Sivarathri Maholsavam of Kozhikode Sree Maha Siva Kshetram at Chalappuram will be held from March 6. A mass feast will be held at 12 noon on Sunday. Cultural programmes will be held from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., the temple committee president, P. Chandran Nair, and the vice-president Krishna, Das, told presspersons today.
