THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 5. The Trivandrum Film Fraternity, a group of cinema professionals based in the city, has decided to honour outstanding creative attempts in Malayalam cinema by presenting awards. The fraternity would select the entries in a manner similar to the Oscar awards, the Chalachitra Academy chairman, T.K. Rajiv Kumar, actor Suresh Gopi and director K. Madhu announced here. The fraternity comprises artistes, technicians and those working in different departments of cinema. To ensure collective responsibility, the fraternity does not have a team of elected office-bearers. The awards would be determined through nominations. A core committee of members would select 20 films from those released in a year. Other than presenting awards in 18 sections, including those for the best film, director, actor and actress and the best director, an award would be given to the best stunt director too. A special award would be given to the creative producer for concerted effort to produce good cinema and a living legend award would be given for lifetime contribution to cinema. Each category would have three nominations and the members would select the winners from them. A sum of Rs.10 lakhs has been set apart for the prize money and Rs. 5 lakhs for mementos. Merit certificates and statuettes would be given to the winners. The creative director would be honoured with the bust of veterans of yesteryear such as Subramaniam and Kunchacko who had made remarkable contributions to the growth and development of Malayalam cinema, they said. Every year the awards would be presented on New Year eve, but the awards for the films released last year would be presented at a colourful function in the city on April 14. The selection of films will strictly be restricted to those released in theatres.
