Murali takes exception to Patel's action

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH. 5. The former KPCC president K. Muraleedharan today took exception to the AICC general secretary, Ahmed Patel's ways of handling factional issues in the party in Kerala.

He made it clear that he would continue to criticise the Chief Minister for his attempts to hijack the party and the Government.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Muraleedharan said it was unfortunate that Mr. Patel should have sent a letter to him through an emissary directing him to drop the rally plans without ascertaining the situation in the party. "He should have telephoned me for my views on party affairs at least by taking into consideration my contribution in preventing a split in the party," he said.

It was unfortunate that attempts were being made to create two kinds of party workers. The rallies were convened as per Mr. Karunakaran's wishes to strengthen the party and there was no question of cancelling them.

He said that his main criticism was against Mr. Chandy's authoritarian style of functioning.

"It is not possible to accept the view that the Chief Minister should not be criticised. I will continue to criticise his authoritarian ways of functioning," he said.

No rationale

He said the party high command had heard only the version of one faction.

There was no rationale in imposing a ban on criticising the Chief Minister while Mr. Karunakaran and his family members were being subjected to all kinds of verbal attacks, he added.

Mr. Muraleedharan said he proposed to reply to Mr. Patel in a few days after gathering all evidence against the rival faction.

Mr. Patel's letter, besides directing Mr. Muraleedharan to drop the rally plans, also pointed out that these would attract disciplinary action in the event of being held.

The letter also advised Mr. Muraleedharan to end his criticism of the Chief Minister.

The two-page letter was more or less in the nature of a charge sheet, accusing the Karunakaran faction of pushing the party towards the brink.

Significantly, the letter was addressed to Mr. Muraleedharan and not to Mr. Karunakaran.

The latter promptly took the entire responsibility for organising the rallies.
