BJP seeks fresh polls in Goa

By A Correspondent

NEDUMBASSERY, MARCH 5. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vice-president and spokesman, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, has said that developments that led to President's rule in Goa are unjustifiable, and fresh elections are the only option to restore democracy to the State.

He told presspersons at the airport here today that people of Goa would give a befitting reply to the Congress and its allies for what he described as their undemocratic and unconstitutional ways.

Mr. Naqvi said mid-term elections to the Lok Sabha would be held any time considering the political scenario. The post-election developments in Bihar and Jharkhand had dented the stability of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre with even the constituents of the alliance fighting against one another. Confusion and instability were threatening the Government. With elections to nine Assemblies slated for early 2006, the differences were only going to get accentuated.

According to Mr. Naqvi, there is no confusion regarding support of five independent MLAs to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Jharkhand. Asked about the presence of the names of two independent MLAs in both the NDA and the UPA lists, he said all the five independents were present before the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, declaring their support to the NDA.

Support for Paswan

In Bihar, he said, it is for Ram Vilas Paswan to decide the formation of Government. He termed the verdict in that State as not only against the Minister for Railways, Lalu Prasad, who is the chief of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, but also against the Congress and the Communist parties.

It was by campaigning against ill-governance and corruption of Mr. Prasad and his wife and Chief Minister, Rabri Devi, that Mr. Paswan won 29 seats. If Mr. Paswan decided to form a Government to change the image of Bihar through good governance, then, the NDA would think of lending him support.

Mr. Naqvi said the BJP had made considerable gains in Bihar and Jharkhand Assembly elections. The election results had resurrected the party and its workers were in an upbeat mood.
