Kollam
By Our Staff Reporter
KOLLAM, MARCH 5. The president of the Kerala Dalit Federation, P. Ramabhadran, has said that the call for unity between the SNDP (Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana) Yogam and the Nair Service Society has a hidden agenda that will harm communal harmony. At a press conference here today, he said the federation did not see any agenda in the unity call that would be beneficial to society as a whole. The most dangerous aspect behind the call was the open challenge against the minority communities. It was on the basis of this challenge that the unity call was being promoted. Such a situation could lead to eruption of communal clashes. He said on the part of Dalits in general and the federation in particular, there was no commitment towards supporting the cause of Hindu unity. He alleged that the so-called soft corner towards Dalits shown occasionally by political parties was only a cosmetic exercise. The undercurrent was by and large antagonistic towards all Dalit interests. The federation demanded that the existing reserved constituencies in the State be declared general seats and that the reservation constituencies should be those where the Dalits had demographic strength. That no reservation constituencies had been allocated to Kannur and Kasaragod districts was anti-democratic.
Conference
The three-day eighth State-level conference of the KDF will begin here on March 12 at the Municipal Town Hall. Mr. Ramabhadran said the conference would be formally inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, on March 13. The Minister for Labour, Babu Divakaran; the Mayor, Sabita Beegum; the Rajya Sabha member N.K. Premachandran; the Leader of the Communist Marxist Party, M.H. Shariyar; the general secretary of the Reservation Protection Action Council, V. Dinakaran; and the PDP working president, C.K. Abdul Aziz, will address the inaugural function. An education conference in the afternoon will be inaugurated by the Education Minister, E.T. Mohammed Basheer. The Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Communities, A.P. Anil Kumar, will preside. On March 14, Mr. Ramabhadran will inaugurate the delegates' session.
