Hindi speakers form largest group, claims scholar

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, MARCH 5. Jayanthi Prasad Nautiyal, noted Hindi scholar, has claimed that Hindi is the number one language in the world in terms of the number of people who speak it, with Mandarin (Chinese) second.

Dr. Nautiyal claims his research spanning 24 years has reached a conclusive stage where it is possible to state that Hindi is the language that is spoken most in the world.

Dr. Nautiyal, banker by profession (Chief Manager in the Corporation Bank), is a post-doctoral scholar in Hindi. He told The Hindu that his research was initiated to set right the incongruity regarding comparative statistical data pertaining to languages, which has been published in books of various universities and in the statistical books published by other institutions.

During the course of his research, it became clear that the language most spoken in the world is Hindi and not Mandarin as is popularly believed.

Dr. Nautiyal sent his research findings to the seventh World Hindi Conference organised at Surinam on June 5 and 6, 2004. This was published in the souvenir of Bharathiya Sanskritik Sambandh Parishad and received positive feedback, which enthused him to look at the statistics published by various magazines on Chinese and subject the data pertaining to world languages to a non-partial cross-checking of statistics.

The wide-ranging statistics mentioned in the paper of Dr. Nautiyal are based on the population reports of 2004.

China is the most populous country. So it is the general view that all Chinese people speak Chinese and that even residents of Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam speak Chinese and that the number of people speaking Chinese amounts to 900 million and hence it is the most spoken language, which is not exactly correct. China, like India, is a multilingual country. China has its own dialects. To ensure linguistic uniformity of all regions, the Chinese people standardised one dialect, Mandarin.

The status of Chinese language underwent a change only in the past 50 years when Chinese was made the medium of instruction in primary education. Even today Cantonese is the most widely spoken language in Hong Kong and other parts of the world. Dr. Nautiyal's research shows that 900 million speak Chinese whereas the number of people conversant with Hindi in India and world over totals 1,022 million.
