They need understanding rather than compassion

KOCHI, MARCH. 5. The Minister for Fisheries and Sports, Dominic Presentation, has called upon society to show more concern and support for the caring of Parkinson's disease patients.

He was inaugurating the 20th all-India seminar-cum-free medical camp on Parkinson's disease organised by the Parkinson's Society of India and Rotary Club of Cochin East at Ernakulam Town Hall. The Minister pointed out that more than compassion, the patients of this disease needed understanding and supportive gestures from the part of family and society.

He recalled a personal incident when a relative of his was recognised with Parkinson's disease and how she got moral support from the presence of Diwakar Deo, founder of the society. He lauded Dr. Deo for maintaining his spirit in combating such a disease along with providing immense courage for patients.

Felicitations

Meenakshi Sundaram, a specialist in Parkinson's Disease from Arunai Neuro Clinic, Chennai; Mathew Abraham, neurologist, Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital, Ernakulam; and the senior journalist K.M. Roy offered felicitations. Cherian Peter, president, Rotary Club of Cochin East, presided. Dr. Deo presented mementos to the Minister and other dignitaries. M. Balachandran, project director of the society, and Reghu Ramachandran, secretary, Rotary Club of Cochin East, spoke. A team of four doctors including Dr. Sundaram, Murali Krishnan, Rajendran and Dr. Abraham participated in the technical session. Dr. Sundaram presented the keynote address. Dr. Rajendran spoke on Parkinson's disease and surgery.

Resolution

The meeting passed a resolution demanding travel concession for Parkinson's disease patients and a companion on trains. A copy of the resolution was handed over to Mr. Presentation.

After the technical session, the patients present were given free medical check-up by the team of expert doctors.
