THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 5 . The city police chased and intercepted an armed gang that went on the rampage at Thycaud late on Friday night. The arrested persons included an Indian Air Force (IAF) staffer and a gang leader based in Jagathy, the police said. The City Police Commissioner, Balaram Kumar Upadhyaya, said country bombs, swords and iron rods were seized from the accused. The Circle Inspector, Thampanoor, E. Sherifudeen, identified the arrested persons as Jayan alias `Pantham' Jayan of Jagathy, Shibu, Shaju, Shamnad, Aji of Sasthamangalam and Rajeev of Manacaud. The police said that `Pantham' Jayan was wanted in several cases in the city, including the rape of a minor Maldivian girl in Medical College police station limits in 2003. Last year, Jayan was arrested by the police on the charge of attempting to murder a youth travelling on a motorcycle. The seriously injured youth was transported to the hospital on the direction of the then Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, who was witness to the incident at Devaswom Board Junction. The police said Jayan, who is also into modelling and fashion shows, headed an extortion racket in Jagathy. He is also wanted in several assault cases. The police identified the arrested IAF staffer as Shamnad. The police said the gang members, who were travelling in a Mahindra Scorpio (KL-07-2828), attacked a group of youth in Thycaud. Six motorcycles were damaged in the attack. The gang members fled the scene in their vehicle after the attack. They were intercepted near the Government Law College at Barton Hill. The accused were today produced before magistrate. They were remanded to judicial custody for a period of 14 days.
Country pistol seized
The police today seized a country pistol and 17 rounds from an apartment complex in Marappalam. The pistol was found in the apartment rented by one Nizamudeen who had been arrested in connection with a job racket.
