Kolkata reigns supreme

VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 6 . Barring, D. Suren of host Visakhapatnam claiming the veterans singles crown in table tennis, Kolkota won the rest of titles in the all-India Major Ports 26th hockey and 28th table tennis tournaments which concluded at the Port Stadium here on Sunday.

Kolkata, runner-up last year, upstaged holder Mumbai, to clinch the hockey title in the five-team round-robin tournament. It retained the table tennis team title on Saturday.

In the table tennis individual events, Amit Mookherjee defeated Manoj Varghese, the only participant from Cochin port in both tournaments, in a repeat of last year's men's singles final. Soumik De Sarkar and Swapan Basu had earlier won the doubles titles.

Suren, third last year, defeated holder P. Buch of Kandla while runner-up Prakash Rane of Mumbai lost to team-mate P.B. Syambarker in the match for third place. Mumbai won all the three junior boys individual events.

The Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust and present Chairman of the All-India Major Ports Sports Board, K. Ratna Kishore, gave away the trophies and prizes.

The results:

Table tennis (Men's singles final): Amit Mookherjee (Kolkota) bt Manoj Varghese (Cochin) 11-9, 10-12, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7. Third place: Swapan Basu (Kol) w/o Soumic De Sarkar (Kol). Doubles final: Soumik De Sarkar/Swapan Basu bt Pankaj Kadoo/Sunil Kelkar (Mumbai) 11-5, 11-5, 11-5. Third place: P. Buch/Mahesh Hingorni (Kandla) w/o G.V.S. Rama Rao/D. Suren (Visakhapatnam).

Veterans singles final: D. Suren bt P. Buch 11-6, 11-6, 11-6. Third place: P.B. Syambarker (Mumbai) bt Prakash Rane (Mumbai) 11-4, 8-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7.

Boys Under-20 final: Siddesh Gwade (Mumbai) bt D. Suryanag (VPT) 3-0. Third place: Paresh Murekar (Mumbai) bt Nakasha (NMPT) 3-0. Under-18 final: Paresh Murekar bt Siddesh Gawde 3-2. Third place: Suryanag bt Kushal Sangatani (Kandla) 3-2. Under-14 final: Paresh Murekar bt Siddesh 3-2. Third place: Kushal bt Y. Deenesh (VPT) 3-0.

Hockey standings: 1. Kolkota (12 points), 2. Mumbai (9), 3. Visakhapatnam (6), 4. Chennai (3), 5. Tuticorin (0).
