Orissa
BHUBANESWAR, MARCH 6. The Orissa Government has ordered rescheduling of working hours of daily labourers in view of the abnormal rise in temperature. Official sources said all hard manual work has to be avoided between 11.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. Exposure to excessive heat would make workers susceptible to sunstroke and dehydration which could lead to death. The day temperature in some districts is known to go beyond 45 degrees Celsius and even touch 49 degrees. Hence, it was absolutely necessary to reschedule the working hours. All agencies engaged in executing works of State and Central departments and private employers have been advised accordingly, the sources said. The rescheduling of work in progress might be made as far as practicable so that work was done during morning and late afternoon hours without hampering production and cut in wages.
Essential services
Where the nature of work was such that the rescheduling was of emergent nature or connected with maintenance of essential services, the employers concerned and contractors should take precautionary measures such as provision of drinking water and sheds for the workers and access to emergency medical aid. They should also ensure availability of adequate oral rehydration solution packets at the worksite. PTI
