Soren preferred as Chief Minister: CSDS survey

By Yogendra Yadav &
Sanjay Kumar

NEW DELHI, MARCH. 6. Though the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha did not perform as well as he would have liked, Shibu Soren can take consolation that he remains the popular choice for Chief Minister. This is the finding of a post-poll survey conducted in Jharkhand by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, supported by The Hindu .

Asked whom they favoured as Chief Minister, 23 per cent of the respondents backed Mr. Soren. This put him one percentage point ahead of Babulal Marandi, the first BJP Chief Minister of the State who was deposed by his own Bharatiya Janata Party. Ten per cent supported Arjun Munda, who was Chief Minister till the election.

Like the election result itself, this is something of a technical victory for Mr. Soren. He was helped by the fact that the BJP voters were divided between Mr. Marandi and Mr. Munda, while his own ally, the Congress, produced no major rival.

Mr. Soren enjoys a much higher support among Adivasis as compared with the other contenders, who are all Adivasis. But his popularity cuts across communities. He is the most popular choice among Muslims and Dalits. Mr. Marandi has the lead over Mr. Soren among the "upper castes", the Mahatos, and the Other Backward Castes.

If we compare the ratings of the two BJP leaders, Mr. Marandi is more popular than Mr. Munda across the social divide. There is some correspondence between their personal ratings and that of the two BJP Governments they headed. Asked to compare Mr. Marandi's Government with Mr. Munda's, 45 per cent felt the former was better as against 20 per cent that favoured the latter.
