Held for evicting couple

SIVAKASI MARCH 6. The Sivakasi (East) police today arrested Selvam, `Nattammai' (village head) of Alamarathupatti, and three others for allegedly forcing a couple to leave the village.

According to police, the village panchayat asked Kaliswari to pay a fine of Rs. 18,000 to her husband Karuppasamy for marring another person Isakimuthu. Kaliswari's second marriage was held on February 22.

However, as the couple did not pay the said amount, Selvam and 22 others allegedly threatened Isakimuthu and his mother. Besides, the couple was also asked to leave the village. They were not allowed to fetch water from the public tap. Following a complaint by Kaliswari, the police arrested four persons and are on the look out for 19 others.

`Issue clearance certificate'

CHENNAI MARCH 6 . The All-India Congress Committee secretary, Sudarshan Natchiappan, has criticised the State Government for not cooperating with the Centre in implementing the desalination plant and for not issuing the Pollution Control Board clearance certificate for the Sethu Samudram project.

In a statement here today, he also criticised the National Democratic Alliance for not allowing Parliament to function normally. Not allowing the members to have any discussion on the President's speech was making a "mockery of democracy."

Meet on cosmetics

CHENNAI MARCH 6 . A four-day meet, Beauwell India 2005, showcasing the issues of and opportunities in India's beauty services and cosmetics will be held here from March 7 to 10.

Organised by the southern regional chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the conference will focus on global trends, the market situation in India and the global opportunities for Indian herbal products, according to a CII release.

Life term for four

NAGERCOIL MARCH 6 . The district sessions judge, Sivaprakasam, has sentenced four persons to life imprisonment for having murdered an Armed Reserve Constable on January 2, 1997.

According to the prosecution, Arjunan (34), Alankamani (53), Chellasamy (32) and Gopalan (45) waylaid Kamalappan (42) of Parapupotteri in the district and attacked him with iron rods. He succumbed to injuries in the Thiruvanathapuram Medical College Hospital the next day.

Two killed as car overturns

THENI MARCH 6 . Two persons were killed and six others injured when their car overturned near Kottur on the Cumbum-Theni main road today.

The accident occurred while they were going to Batlagundu from Cumbum. The deceased were Sabid Muraj (29) of Pudhupatti in Cumbum and her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Ayisha Rahmath Nisha. The injured were admitted to a private hospital.

Rain continues in Kanyakumari

NAGERCOIL MARCH 6. Rain lashed the district for the second day today.

Aralvaimozi recorded the maximum rainfall of 27.8 mm followed by Myladi 20.6, Kanyakumari 11, Boothapandi 10.5, Nagercoil and Kottaram 7.2 each and Surulode 4.5.

Tuticorin district received 12 mm during the last hours ending 8 a.m. Vypar received 4 mm, Kizharasadi 2 and Srivaikuntam 6.

Three killed in bus-lorry smash

TIRUCHI MARCH 6 . Three bus passengers, including two women, were killed and 14 others injured when a State Express Transport Corporation bus they were travelling collided with a lorry on the Tiruchi - Madurai National Highway at Valasupatti today.

The police said the deceased were Murugeswari (32), Jaimaharani (24) and Devaraj (35). The bus was bound for Madurai from Chennai. While the two women died on the spot, Devaraj succumbed to injuries at a private hospital here.

7 picked up for rice smuggling

TIRUNELVELI MARCH 6 . The Perumapuram police today picked up seven persons for interrogation in connection with the smuggling of ration rice from a godown at Nanguneri and some of the ration shops here to Andhra Pradesh.

Police sources said Jothi Pandian, Assistant Manager, Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, lodged a complaint with the police that the officials of a godown at Nanguneri and the salesmen of some ration shops could not account for the rice worth Rs. 11 lakhs. The police picked up the godown superintendent, Arumugam (52) of Rahmath Nagar near Palayamkottai, the lorry contractor, Esakki (40) of Kokkirakulam, the special officer, civil supplies, Ramalingam (50), the ration shop salesmen, Jaganathan (55) of Paruththipaadu, Nambirajan (43) of Valliyoor, Subbiah (42) of Puthukurichi and Vallinayagam (39) of Ilaiyamuthoor for interrogation.

The rice was smuggled to Hyderabad, Tirupathi and Guntoor in five lorries, the police said.

Country bombs seized

TIRUNELVELI MARCH 6 . The Koodankulam police and a bomb detection and disposal squad today seized 34 more country bombs at Kooththankuzhi, a coastal hamlet about 80 km from here, taking the total number of the banned explosives seized to 92.

The bombs were kept in polythene bags and buried in a remote area, the police said.

During the first raid at Fatima Nagar on February 26, the police seized 13 bombs and arrested two fishermen. Twelve bombs were seized on March 2 and 33 on March 3.

Suicide

ERODE MARch 6 . A 16-year-old girl committed suicide near Gobichettipalayam due to stomach ache. According to the police, Manimegalai, daughter of Veerappan of S. Ganapathypalayam hanged herself at her house on Saturday. She died at the Gobichettipalayam GH today.

Murdered

ERODE MARch 6 . A 60-year-old man was hacked to death in Modakurichi on Saturday.

According to the police, Senniappan, an agricultural labourer of Aandakothampalayam, Modakurichi, was walking along the road when his relative Vaiyapuri hacked him to death over a domestic quarrel. It is stated that Vaiyapuri also injured another relative Perumal at his house, and Vaiyapuri was himself hurt in the process.

Man held for forgery

TIRUCHI MARCH 6. A 29-year old man was arrested by the police here today for possessing a French passport in a forged name and for having a `forged arrival seal' of the Chennai airport.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI MARCH 6. The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 54.89 feet today.

The inflow was 197 cusecs and the discharge was 900 cusecs.
