PUDUKOTTAI, MARCH 7. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) conducted a month-long training programme for a select group of farmers on orchard establishment and value addition of fruits on its premises in Vamban recently. The training laid emphasis on aspects like soil testing, selection of site, selection of fruit crops, improved nursery technologies, soil, water and fertilizer management, plant protection, integrated farming system and preservation of fruits. The farmers were explained about the improved package of practices for fruits like mango, sapota, cashew, jackfruit, banana, amla and citrus. They were also updated about the farm equipment, the advantages of drip irrigation, the ways of preparation of jam, jelly, squash and pickles besides marketing of fruit crops. The participants were also given certificates. A press release from the KVK said that the acidic laterite soil provided immense opportunity to establish horticultural plantations like cashew, mango, amla, sapota, citrus and banana, to some extent, which offered a great scope for commercial cultivation in the district. Land put under cultivation in the district constituted 27.2 per cent. However, the current and other fallows accounted for 23 and 9 per cent respectively. Cultivable waste accounted for 4.6 per cent in the district. To utilise these current fallows and cultivable waste lands effectively, establishment of high-yielding horticulture and hortisilviculture plantations were the only solution to bring those lands also under green cover, the release added.
