Pollution board sends report, contempt plea dismissed

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MARCH 6. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has forwarded to the Centre the minutes of the public hearings on the Sethusamudhram project.

This submission was made by TNPCB counsel Rita Chandrasekaran when a contempt plea preferred by the Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT), nodal agency to execute the project, came up for admission before a Division Bench comprising Justice M. Karpagavinayagam and Justice C. Nagappan this morning. Recording the compliance, it dismissed the petition.

Earlier, the Additional Solicitor-General, V.T. Gopalan, said the board maintained a stoic silence despite a specific direction from the First Bench and a personal visit to its office by the TPT Chairman, besides two reminders.

Ms. Rita Chandrasekaran said all relevant reports were compiled and forwarded to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests on March 4. The board's activities were slowed down by the tsunami tragedy.

Counsel also furnished a letter from the TNPCB Chairperson, Girija Vaidyanathan, to the Ministry detailing the dates and venues of hearings. These were held on September 7, 2004 and January 28, 2005 in Nagapattinam district; September 8, 2004 and February 2, 2005 in Tiruvarur; September 10 and November 26, 2004 in Thanjavur; September 14 and November 25, 2004 in Pudukottai; September 15 and November 20, 2004 in Tuticorin; and September 16 and November 19, 2004 in Ramanathapuram district.
