NEW DELHI, MARCH 8. With elections to the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association coming up, India would seek support for the West Bengal Assembly Speaker, Hashim Abdul Halim, to be part of the world body. The Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, has personally taken up the case of Mr. Halim, who is one the longest-serving Speakers in the country, and work for his election, Parliamentary sources said today. Mr. Chatterjee has discussed the issue with the External Affairs Minister, Natwar Singh, that India could rally the support of like-minded countries in favour of Mr. Halim. Mr. Halim has been serving as the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly for the fifth term, after being elected to it in 1982.
