2.57 lakh tonnes of samba paddy procured

THANJAVUR MARCH 8. A total of 2.57 lakh tonnes of samba paddy had been procured so far in Thanjavur district, according to the Collector, Veera Shanmugha Moni.

He told presspersons here today that the arrivals have come down as the samba harvest was almost over in the district. There was a dearth of gunnies a few days ago but, now seven lakh gunnies have arrived and there was no problem.

Regarding ration cards, the Collector said that 95 per cent of the cardholders have submitted their applications for getting new ration cards before February 28, the first deadline set by the Government. In the extension period up to March six, all cardholders have given their applications.

It has been planned to take up 26,537 development works at a cost of Rs. 66.34 crores through the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) in the district this year. Out of these works 22,821 works have already been completed. The rest would be completed by this month.

Under the Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana scheme 5590 works have been taken up at a cost of Rs. 14.93 crores. Under the Indra Awaz Yojana scheme, it has been planned to take up construction of 1477 houses at a cost of Rs. 5.01 crores out of which construction of 1019 houses have been completed at a cost of Rs. 4.27 crores.

Under the Prime Minister's Rural Housing Scheme 194 group houses, built at a cost of Rs. 70.74 lakhs, were nearing completion.

Over 15,000 individual toilets have been completed at a cost of Rs. 1.50 crores under complete sanitation scheme. Eleven women sanitary complexes have been completed at a cost of Rs. 24.75 lakhs, he said.

Regarding provision of drinking water, the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board had taken up various schemes. In the Municipal areas of Thanajvur, Pattukottai and Kumbakonam, water was being supplied at 90 litres per head per day. In the twelve special panchayats idn the district 70 litres per capita water is supplied per day, the Collector said.
