Thanks a million, dear readers

The Hindu is happy to announce to its readers and well-wishers that it has reached another significant milestone in its 126-year-old history — a million copies sold daily.

Our newspaper's net-paid circulation, certified by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC), for the half year July-December 2004 is 1,047,121 copies per day. This represents an increase of 5.86 per cent over the net-paid circulation of 989,147 daily copies for the previous half-year, January-June 2004.

An achievement such as this would not have been possible without the abundant support, goodwill, and trust of our readers; and the competence, commitment and hard work of both our journalist and non-journalist staff. Our newsagents and others involved in the distribution chain, advertisers, advertising agencies, and other business associates have contributed significantly to the newspaper's growth.

On its part, The Hindu has been striving ceaselessly to reach higher levels of reliability, relevance, and professional standards in offering its readers high quality and varied fare, depth and width of coverage, and enhanced local coverage. Most importantly, it has adhered steadfastly to its core journalistic values of truth telling, independence, objectivity, seriousness, and integrity.

The rise in The Hindu's circulation chart has been steep over the past decade, specifically since March 4, 1994 when the page level in the main section was sharply increased. A variety of supplements, subject- and city-specific, has enhanced the value of the newspaper.

The Hindu's net-paid circulation crossed the half-a-million mark during January-June 1995.

It is noteworthy that the second half million in net-paid daily circulation has come within a decade.

The Hindu, headquartered in Chennai, the largest printing centre, is now printed from 12 centres — 11 of them located in the four Southern States and one in Delhi.

The circulation charts tell an interesting story.

The Hindu thanks its readers for taking it to a new peak.
