KATHMANDU, MARCH 8. Kanakmani Dixit, publisher and editor of a Nepali fortnightly, Himal Khabarpatrika, who was arrested for criticising the Emergency imposed by King Gyanendra, was released after a brief detention on Monday night. "I was released at midnight after four hours of detention at Jawalakhel Police Station," Mr. Dixit said. "I don't know the exact reason why I was detained. Probably the articles I had published in my magazine against the royal takeover prompted them to arrest me." "Although I was detained for a brief period it shows how mediapersons are harassed in Nepal during the emergency rule of the King," Mr. Dixit said. "Initially they had plans to detain me for longer, but probably due to publicity and pressure they decided to release me soon." Mr. Dixit returned to Nepal after delivering a lecture on "Review of the royal takeover" organised by the India International Centre in New Delhi on March 4. PTI
