Devotees queuing up at the Chandramouleshwar Temple at Kadri in Mangalore for Mahashivaratri puja on Tuesday.
MANGALORE, MARCH 8. Mahashivaratri was observed with traditional fervour and gaiety in Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday. People thronged the various Shiva temples across the district in large numbers right since the morning and offered prayers to Lord Shiva. Special Bilvarchane pujas were offered in all Shiva temples and devotees took up fasting in accordance with tradition. Some of the temples, which attracted a large number of devotees, include the Sri Manjunateshwara Temple at Kadri, Sri Gokaranateshwara Temple at Kudroli, Sri Panchalingeshwara Temple at Urwa, Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple at Puttur, and the Sahasralingeshwara Temple at Uppinangady. Mahashivaratri was also celebrated at the Sri Manjunathaswamy Temple at Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala. According to Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, president of district unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, people here prefer to observe the day by fasting and visiting temples. "It is observed in temples and not as much in respective homes,'' he said. Mounesh Kumar Chavani, AIR artiste, presented a special programme of Hindustani music and devotional songs at the Gokarnanateshwara Kshetra.
