CHENNAI. MARCH 8. Actor Kamal Hassan today lashed out against the growing intolerance towards freedom of speech and expression and said it was a matter of concern that artistes were frequently arm-twisted into changing titles by those with political ambitions. He also criticised the Central Board of Film Certification for having political appointees as members. The actor said that the board should have members from all walks of life and be representative of the common man. Political appointees would only carry forward the ideology of their respective parties, he said. Speaking at a seminar on `Media Law' organised by the British High Commission, he said the media should exercise restraint and refrain from speculation. A `trial by media' only compounded the problems of filmmakers, he said. Susheela Ravindranath, Editor of Sunday Express, and Jeff Wilson, First Secretary, Press and Communication, British High Commission, New Delhi, were the others who participated in the session on `Freedom of Expression and Responsibility.' Joshua Rozenberg, Legal Editor of The Daily Telegraph, spoke on `Free Speech and Freedom of Expression' before teams from various colleges fought a debate on `Pin-ups and the Press' and debated the role of censorship in fighting the negative portrayal of women in the media. Summing up the observations by the students, Ian Mason, Acting British Deputy High Commissioner, Chennai, endorsed the view that "the remote control should be the censor."
