HYDERABAD, MARCH 9. That the presence of the media has the potential to trigger unusual debates was once again established on Wednesday in the lobbies of the Assembly. The TDP MLA, Nagam Janardhan Reddy, was scheduled to address a press conference at one of the committee halls in the Assembly but was delayed. In his absence, the Major Irrigation Minister, P. Laxmaiah, spoke to mediapersons about plans to supply drinking water to north coastal Andhra towns. Even as he was concluding, Dr. Janardhan Reddy walked towards the door. Dr. Reddy sensed an opportunity on noticing the presence of a clutch of photographers and videographers. Raising his voice, he appealed to the Minister to save the farmers of Mahabubnagar by closing the power plant being built by a relative of the Chief Minister on the Tungabhadra. Not one to lag behind, the Minister hit back and accused the TDP of trying to capitalise on publicity. He said the power plant was sanctioned during the TDP regime. Dr. Reddy shot back saying that it was the Congress Government in Karnataka that accorded the sanction. The tea and snacks supplied by the TDLP also figured in the light-hearted exchanges. Dr. Reddy asked: "Is it proper to use my tea and snack?" Mr. Laxmaiah retorted that it was the TDP leader, N. Chandrababu Naidu, who was in the habit of hijacking others' time and venue for his publicity (a reference to the BJP's Hyderabad conclave used by Mr. Naidu to address a press conference).
