CHENNAI, MARCH 9. The Madras High Court has issued notice to the Chennai Collector and the Inspector of Police of the Fishing Harbour Police Station on a contempt of court petition alleging that more than 20 huts had been demolished in the Anna Nagar Kuppam area in violation of court orders. A Division Bench comprising Justice M. Karpagavinayagam and Justice C. Nagappan ordered notices, returnable in four weeks, on a contempt petition filed by S. Thomas Jeyaraj of the North Tamil Nadu Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation Committee. According to the petitioner, over 20 huts were demolished by the authorities on March 6 taking advantage of the fact that the original owners had been shifted to temporary shelters at Kargil Nagar, 9.8 km from the Kuppam. A large number of Chennai Corporation and police authorities undertook the demolition with the help of heavy machineries and lorries. He pointed out that the March 3 order of the court permitted the authorities to undertake only enumeration work and nothing else. The petitioner alleged that the authorities committed irregularities including distribution of two-three tokens to affected families and resort to intimidatory tactics as well.
