Jack Straw commends `cricket diplomacy'

By Hasan Suroor

LONDON, MARCH 9. The British Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, has commended the India-Pakistan cricket diplomacy saying it is a sign of continuing "improvement" in the relations between the two countries.

Speaking to reporters here after holding talks with the visiting External Affairs Minister, Natwar Singh, Mr. Straw expressed satisfaction with the India-Pakistan peace process. He said it was among the issues which figured in his talks with Mr. Singh.

"We had a very good discussion on bilateral relations and a wide range of world issues," Mr. Straw said.

These included Iran, the "Middle East" and Afghanistan. He said there was a commonality of views on all issues.

Mr. Singh said he "updated" Mr. Straw on the progress of the India-Pakistan "composite dialogue" since the two met in New Delhi three weeks ago.

In reply to a question, Mr. Singh confirmed that an invitation had been sent to the Pakistan President, Parvez Musharraf, to visit India during the current cricket series but said no dates had been fixed.

"We have left it to him to choose the dates," he said.

Mr. Singh, who was on his way to South Africa on an official visit, said that apart from India-Pakistan relations, he also discussed with Mr. Straw the coming visit to India of the U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice.

"On all issues we had similar views," he said.

The meeting was part of the ministerial-level contacts between India and Britain envisaged in the joint statement issued after the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's visit to London last year.
