dated March 11, 1955: Steel plant for Bengal

The Union Production Minister, Mr. K.C. Reddy, said in Calcutta on March 9 that West Bengal figured very "hopefully" in the matter of setting up an additional steel plant, contemplated under the Second Five-Year Plan. Mr. Reddy, who was presiding over the twelfth All-India Textile Conference, said that the Government of India were "conscious of middle class unemployment in West Bengal", and assured them that nothing would be left undone to solve this gigantic problem. He said the accent was on industrial development and, in the Second Plan, West Bengal would find her due place. The Minister suggested that the controversy regarding the public and private sectors of industry might be closed as there was no inherent difference between the two. Every sector must be enabled to fit into its proper place in national planning. Mr. Reddy said that at least one more steel plant with a million ton capacity would be set up in the country during the Second Five-Year Plan period. The country was on the eve of an industrial revolution, and, in the planning programme, iron and steel production would be placed in the forefront. Two plants were now going to be set up, one in Madhya Pradesh and the other in Orissa and in the Second Plan period West Bengal would most probably have the third.
