SINGAPORE, MARCH 10. Tung Chee Hwa, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, formally tendered his resignation today. Mr. Tung's resignation coincides with the move of the Central Government in Beijing to nominate him for the post of Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). "I appreciate the trust placed upon me by the Central Government with this nomination," he said as part of the announcement on his resignation. The resignation will become effective, if it is accepted by Beijing under Hong Kong's Basic Law. The law provides for the administration of the former British colony under China's sovereign control on the basis of the principle of "one country, two systems." The territory's Chief Secretary, Donald Tsang, will be the Acting Chief Executive. Mr. Tung, whose tenure for nearly eight years had now become increasingly enmeshed in political controversies over his style and administrative priorities, cited his "deteriorating" health as the prime reason for his decision, which, according to him, was made an hour before his own announcement of this move. The other reason he adduced was his deep and abiding concern for sustaining Hong Kong's "pretty good stability." He told his fellow citizens that it was better he stepped aside as "there is a lot of work that needs to be done."
