CUDDALORE, MARCH 10. The State Government has evolved a scheme to assist tsunami-hit fishermen in taking up repairs to their damaged boats, without the help of bank loans, the Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, said here on Wednesday. He told presspersons that as per the statistics provided by the Fisheries Department, the tsunami damaged 272 wooden mechanised boats and 229 fibreglass-mechanised boats with engines in the district. The total damage in the district was estimated at Rs. 333 crores (Rs. 283 crores for infrastructure and Rs. 50 crores for boats). Solatium amounting to Rs. 37 crores was disbursed to fisherfolk to repair and replace damaged catamarans and fishing nets. Mr. Bedi said Rs. 1.89 crores had been sanctioned for development works in the affected areas. These included road-laying at Devanampattinam (Rs 2.75 lakhs), Sonankuppam (Rs. 4.50 lakhs) and Singarathope (Rs. 6.50 lakhs), the Vriddhachalam-Parangipettai Road (Rs 7.5 lakhs), and for dredging the Uppanar (Rs 26.55 lakhs). Similar works would be carried out at Parangipettai (Rs 22.55 lakhs) and Killai (Rs 29.70 lakhs).
