KOLLAM, MARCH 10. Media awards of the Fine Arts Society (FAS) for 2004 have been announced. The FAS Award for reporting goes to Mustaq Kodinji, Malappuram reporter of Chandrika, and that for news photography to D. Venu Gopal, Kollam bureau photographer of Kerala Kaumudi. At a press conference here today, the FAS secretary, Palazhi Bhaskaran, said that Mr. Kodinji was selected for the award for his serialised reports that appeared under the heading, `Theruvil eriyum balyam'. It depicted the life of street children who earn a living by begging that appeared in Chandrika in November 2004. Mr. Venugopal won the award for his photograph, `Thala chaaikaan idamilla', published in Kerala Kaumudi on September 13, 2004. It shows the plight of a family that lost its house following removal of roadside encroachments. The awards carry a cash prize of Rs. 5,001 and a trophy. The award for reporting is instituted in memory of the late journalist and writer, Mayyanad Damodaran B.A. The awards will be given away here on March 20.
