Silchar gears up for veterans' match

GUWAHATI, MARCH 10. Silchar, tucked away in the country's remotest north-eastern region, is preparing to host an international exhibition match involving veteran players of India and Pakistan on March 13.

Named the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) Cup, the former greats of the two nations — under the team names of Kapil Dev XI and Abdul Qadir XI — would fight it out at the Satindra Mohan Dev stadium here.

Addressing a press conference here today, former cricketer Karan Dubey, district sports association secretary, Badal Dey, and general secretary, Babul Hore, said the exhibition match would be in line with the `Samjhautha Cup' and aimed at promoting ties between the two countries.

The teams travel arrangements, Dubey said, was being made by Indian Airlines and most of the players were scheduled to arrive here on the morning of the match.

The teams:

Kapil Dev XI: Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath, Venkatapathy Raju, Pravin Amre, Sanjeev Sharma, Vijay Dahiya, Narendra Hirwani, Samir Dighe, Vivek Razdan, Nayan Mongia, Syed Kirmani, Sadagopan Ramesh, Ajay Jadeja and Madan Lal.

Abdul Qadir XI: Abdul Qadir, Ijaz Ahmed, Saeed Anwar, Aamir Sohail, Shoaib Mohammed, Manzur Elahi, Akram Raza, Azhar Khan, Tahir Rasheed, Mushtaq Ahmed, Waqar Younis and Ali Zia. — PTI
