COIMBATORE, MARCH 10. The Salem-based Sri Selvi Store Groups (mainly into pulses and grains wholesale business) will commission its second cold storage facility on the Kondalampatty bypass, near Salem, on March 13. One of its partners, V. Sathish, said the group's first facility was started eight years ago and had 2,000 tonnes capacity. Called Sri Selvi Cold Storage it was located at Kakapalayam, 18 km from Salem. With increasing demand, it was decided to open another one nearer to the Salem town. Constructed at a cost of Rs. 2.75 crores, Shri Krishna Cold Storage (the second facility) had eight chambers, each with a capacity of 750 tonnes. Mr. Sathish said farmers from Erode, Salem, Hosur, Coimbatore, and even from some Northern States used this facility for storing fruits and vegetables. Sometimes flowers were also kept temporarily. The new facility would be for fruits, vegetables, pulses, eggs and butter. "One of the chambers is specially designed and temperature could be maintained up to minus 20 degrees Celsius so that ice-cream could be stored." Both the storages operated for 20 hours a day, he added.
