By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, MARCH 10. Four women from Karaikal who lost their children in the tsunami underwent free recanalisation surgery at the Government General Hospital here on Thursday. ``The four women all aged below 35 have lost their children in the tsunami. The surgery, which started in the morning went on till in the evening and all are doing well'', Dilip Kumar Baliga, Medical Superintendent, told The Hindu. Normally, the patients who undergo recanalisation would be in the hospital for three to five days. Since this was a special case they would stay in the hospital for a few more days, he added. He said the four women were briefed about the possible complications and the post-operative care that had to be taken. He put the success rate at about 60 per cent. The families had given their willingness in written consent form, he said. Dr. B. Sarath, senior consultant, specialist in reproductive medicine, Apollo Hospital, performed the surgery. The Pondicherry Government had identified 11 mothers in Karaikal who had lost their children. Those who underwent the recanalisation on Thursday have lost all the children. Recanalisation would be performed on others in a phased manner. Dr Sarath had agreed to perform the surgery, he added.
