NEW DELHI, MARCH 10. Vice-Admiral S.V. Gopalachari, 59, one of the seniormost officers at the naval headquarters here, passed away today. He was commissioned into the Navy in 1967 and was an antisubmarine warfare specialist. A graduate of the Royal Naval Staff College, Greenwich (U.K.), he also attended the Royal College of Defence Studies (U.K.). During his illustrious service of 38 years, Vice-Admiral Gopalachari held various important posts afloat and ashore. He was the commissioning Executive Officer of INS Hosdurg. He commanded INS Abhay, Talwar and Godavari. Under his command, INS Godavari took part in Operation Cactus off the Maldives in 1988. Vice-Admiral Gopalachari was appointed Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff at the Naval Headquarters on promotion to the rank of Vice-Admiral. He is survived by his wife and two children.
