HYDERABAD, MARCH 10. The Telugu Desam Legislature Party (TDLP) on Thursday accused the Government and Congress legislators of speaking in two voices over the controversy surrounding the mini hydel project of a relative of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, near Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS) anicut in Karnataka. Addressing a press conference, the TDLP deputy leaders -- T. Devender Goud, N. Janardhan Reddy and Y. Ramakrishnudu -- said it was clear from the Major Irrigation Minister, P. Lakshmaiah's statement in the House that the hydel project was permitted unilaterally by Karnataka and that it would affect the RDS ayacut in Mahabubnagar district. In contrast, the Congress MLA, G. Muddukrishnama Naidu, sought to justify the hydel project. It was unfortunate that Mr. Naidu had justified denial of water to farmers in a perennially drought-hit area, just because the project belonged to Chief Minister's relative.
Challenge to MLA
Mr. Muddukrishnama Naidu did not stop there and went on to contend that there was an agreement on drawal of water from a particular height, they said and challenged him to show it. It was nothing short of betrayal and against the interests of the State. The Pradesh Congress Committee should clarify who was correct, the Minister or the Congress legislator. They made it clear that the party would pursue the issue to its logical end till the work on hydel project was stopped, notwithstanding the Congress strategy of hurling baseless allegations against TDP MLAs. They wondered why the Chief Minister and the Congress MLA from Mahabubnagar district remained silent on such a serious issue affecting an ayacut of 87,000 acres.
