Tibetans take out procession to mark Uprising Day

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, MARCH 10. Tibetans today took out a procession here to mark the 46th anniversary of Tibetan National Uprising Day against the illegal occupation by China.

The Regional Tibetan Youth Congress said the event was held to commemorate the uprising against the Chinese rule on March 10, 1949.

The past 46 years saw the growth of China as a superpower through its economic strength and military prowess. With the "Go East" policy of major economies of the world reaping unparalleled profits, human rights issues and concern for democracy in China has been placed on the backburner, it added.

"This has been supplemented with the China's "Go West" policy with investment of millions of dollars in the Tibetan plateau."

This will affect the religious and cultural heritage of Tibet and its fragile environment, the congress said.

In a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the congress said thousands of Tibetans are living as refugees in different countries, while many are languishing in various prisons of Tibet.

The congress cautioned the dangers of Chinese military deployment in Tibet and Indo-Tibetan border and said it will be a serious threat not only to India but also escalate the arms race in Asia.

Completion of the railway project in Tibet will flood the Indian markets with Chinese goods and may force the closure of many cottage industries in India, it said.
