Cabinet a mix of youth, experience

CHANDIGARH, MARCH 10. Five former ministers, including a woman, Working President of the Haryana Congress, an industrialist, a former Union Minister and a former HPCC president are among the 10 inducted as Cabinet Ministers in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda- led Congress Ministry in the State.

The following are their brief profiles:.

Ajay Singh Yadav: A former Army Captain, he was elected as the member of the Assembly for the fifth time (1989-91, 1991-96, 1996-99, 2000 and 2005). Earlier, during his tenure as Minister for Women and Child Development, he had launched ``Apni Beti Apna Dhan'' scheme for the welfare of girls.

Birender Singh: A grandson of Sir Chhotu Ram who is described as the messiah of farming community, Mr Birender Singh has been elected to the Assembly five times- 977, 1982, 1991, 1996 and 2005- from the Uchana Kalan constituency. He was also an MP from 1984 to 1989 after he was elected from Hisar. He was Cooperation and Dairy Development Minister in Haryana from 1982-84. He also held many important offices in the Congress including president of State Youth Congress from 1980-82 and president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress from 1985-86 and 1990-92.

Chander Mohan: Son of former Chief Minister and president of the State Congress Bhajan Lal, he has been elected to the Assembly from Kalka four times -1991, 1996, 2000 and 2005. He has also been president and general secretary of the Haryana Pradesh Youth Congress.

Kartar Devi: The only woman in the ministry had her education in Rohtak and Ujjain where she did M.A., LL.B and dedicated herself to the uplift of the down- trodden.

She represents Kalanaur (SC) constituency and has served the State as Minister and held many portfolios. She was general secretary of State Congress for seven years.

She has edited Hindi fortnightlies namely Janmeet and Kranti Ka Bigul. She has to her credit a collection of poems entitled Sulagti Chingari.

Lachhman Dass Arora: Elected for the fourth time, Mr Arora is a matriculate and is a businessman by profession.

Om Prakash Jindal: A noted industrialist, Mr. Jindal is father of Kurukshetra MP Navin Jindal and has been elected to the Assembly for the third time. He was also an MP from Kurukshetra (1996) He has also held the post of Chairman, Maharaja Agarsain Medical College, Agroha, N. C. Jindal Charitable Trust and Patron Trustee of Agroha Vikas Trust. The Times Group of Newspapers published a book ``A Man of Steel'' on his life.

Phool Chand Mullana: A former Education Minister, Mr. Mullana had his education at Bilaspur, Yamuna Nagar, Ambala and Chandigarh and did B.A., LL.B.

A lawyer by profession, Mullana has thrice been elected from the Mullana (SC) Constituency in 1972, 1982 and 2005. He has also served the State as a Minister.

Randeep Singh Surjewala: A former president of the Indian Youth Congress, Randeep was appointed Working President of the State Congress a few days before the February3 Assembly election. A lawyer by profession, Mr. Surjewala was first elected to the State Assembly from Narwana Assembly Constituency in 1996 and the second time in 2005 by defeating Om Prakash Chautala. When has was just 17, Randeep was appointed as the youngest general secretary of Haryana Youth Congress. He was also appointed as the youngest Senator of the Punjab University, Chandigarh in 1992. He also served as Chairman of the Haryana Lawyers' Forum from 1990-95.

Surender Singh: Son of former Chief Minister Bansi Lal and younger brother of BCCI president Ranbir Mahendra, Surender Singh has returned to the Assembly after 22 years. He remained a Member of the Assembly from 1977-86 and served as Agriculture and Wildlife Preservation Minister from 1982-83.

He was a Rajya Sabha member from 1986- 92 and elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996 and 1998.

Venod Sharma: A former student union leader, Mr. Sharma has the distinction of representing Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh in different capacities.

He has made his maiden entry to the Haryana Assembly from the Ambala City Constituency. He was made a Member of the Rajya Sabha in 1992 from Punjab and was appointed Union Minister of State in 1995. He was also Member of the Punjab Assembly from 1980-85 from the Banur Constituency and was later made general secretary of Punjab Congress Committee. He was appointed Ppesident of Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee in 1990-98.
