Schedule soon to fix photos on poll rolls

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, MARCH 10. The State election officials will meet the Election Commission in New Delhi on Saturday to evolve a schedule to fix the photographs of voters on the electoral rolls, the Chief Electoral Officer, Naresh Gupta said.

The photo electoral rolls would be based on the Kerala model. The State Election Commission would explore the feasibility of bringing in private agencies to take photographs, Mr. Gupta said.

The revision of electoral rolls would go on till August and shortly after this the election authorities would begin issuing electronic photo identity cards. Efforts were being taken to include the names of all eligible voters based on the information provided by their families. The names of those who had temporarily moved out of the area would also figure, provided they were not included in other polling stations, he said.

Officials engaged in the revision exercise would affix stickers on the doors of houses covered. They would also distribute Form 4 to enable the electorate to get their names included.

The revision would be taken up soon in the tsunami-affected areas. The names of voters in the temporary shelters would be included and would be verified after they occupied permanent structures. Their names would be included in the electoral rolls after final verification.

On the large-scale omission of names from electoral rolls, Mr. Gupta said the Election Commission was monitoring the situation.

The Collector, D. Raajendiran, said the awareness among the local bodies with regard to revision of electoral rolls was good.

Earlier, Mr. Gupta, along with the Joint Chief Electoral Officer, S. Pragadha, and the Collector, reviewed the progress of roll revision for 15 districts, including Madurai. He emphasised the need to place the house numbers in ascending order and list all family members together.
