NEW DELHI, MARCH 10. The Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president, Harsh Vardhan, today charged that the office and residence of the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, had become the nerve centres of corruption, which was spreading at a brisk pace in the Capital, and demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the matter. He also announced that on the first day of the Delhi assembly Budget Session on March 15, a demonstration would be organised outside the House "in protest against corruption in the Delhi Government". Coming down heavily on the Sheila Dikshit regime in the wake of the Sales Tax Department corruption expose earlier this week on the television channel Aaj Tak, which had caught 82 officers and employees allegedly taking bribe, Dr. Vardhan said "it was through some officers posted at the residence and office of the Chief Minister that large-scale postings, transfers, contracts and grants were being managed''. Charging that but for the Chief Minister everyone else was in the know of the goings-on, the BJP leader said a few months ago one of her close confidantes was caught with Rs 10,000 in his drawer. Alleging that the amount had been taken from a needy person for providing him employment, Dr. Vardhan said the bribe money was asked for from the poor person at Ms. Dikshit's residence. Dr. Vardhan also accused Ms. Dikshit of openly ignoring the order of the Lieutenant-Governor and not ordering any serious enquiry into the allegations of corruption prevalent in most of the departments under the Delhi Government. "Many Ministers of the Sheila Dikshit Government are directly collecting their money share from the departmental officers and the fact is well known to the CBI also," he charged. Stating that some of the departments were known for open and brazen corruption, the BJP leader said officers of the Vigilance Department responsible for keeping a watch on corruption in various departments were no better and were themselves neck deep in this practice.
