NEW DELHI, MARCH 10. The Communist Party of India today demanded criminal action against defaulters who have not returned loans to public sector banks and released a "complete" list of companies and people in this category. Stating that the figure of non-performing assets (NPAs) stood at Rs. 3 lakh crores out of a total deposit of Rs. 15 lakh crores, the CPI leader, Gurudas Dasgupta, accompanied by leaders of the All-India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA), released the names of top 10 defaulters against whom "not even a civil suit" was filed as also the top 10 on whom cases were filed. Mr. Dasgupta demanded that the Government should take criminal action against the defaulters, confiscate property and blacklist them. He said that as per the study, fresh NPAs worth Rs. 25,000 crores were added while Rs. 11,074 crores was written off. He said while the Government has till date not published the list of defaulters, the AIBEA published the full list of defaulters of those who had taken loans of over Rs. 1 crore. The CPI leader asserted that they were willing to face action if they had violated any law of secrecy and claimed the action was in discharge of national duty. The CPI leader alleged that several defaulters had access to the corridors of power or were "close to political leaders" but did not name anyone. He said the NPAs included actual loans taken but not returned..
