Clinton undergoes surgery

NEW YORK, MARCH 10. Surgeons removed fluid and scar tissue from Bill Clinton's chest cavity today in the former U.S. President's second operation in six months.

"The surgery was successful," Clinton's office said in a statement. He was described as resting comfortably.

Mr. Clinton underwent heart bypass surgery in September because of clogged arteries. Doctors described today's operation as a low-risk procedure to relieve a complication that crops up in only a fraction of one per cent of bypass patients.

The 58-year-old former President arrived at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center before daybreak.

The Secret Service, police and hospital security staff conducted a sweep of the walkways and corridors as Mr. Clinton was whisked inside through a side entrance. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton was at the hospital with her husband.
