Woman `confined' behind doors

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH. 10. In a bizarre case, the residents of a colony at Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi complained to the police that a retired school teacher had been locked up in her own house by her brother for the past one month. However, the woman told the police that she was not "intentionally locked up" in the house though there were some problems in the family.

As per the complaint, the woman, who used to teach Political Science in a Lajpat Nagar school, had been forced to live in isolation by her brother who had vanished after locking her up. The complaint further said the woman was practically living on the mercy of the neighbours who would give her food by turn. However, the police said the woman, who did have a history of mental illness, told them that her brother did not lock her up.

They also claimed that the family had not left the woman. "Her brother and sister-in-law had gone on their jobs," said a police officer. The Lajpat Nagar police are further looking into the matter.
